In recent years, as work rhythms accelerate and the phenomenon of ‘involution’ intensifies, an increasing number of workers report that weekends off are hard to guarantee—so much so that a two-day weekend has become perceived as a ‘luxury.’ Yet, the weekend rest system is not only a cornerstone of modern labor rights but also essential for physical and mental well-being, improved quality of life, and sustainable social development. China officially adopted the five-day workweek in 1995, institutionalizing respect for workers’ right to rest. However, in practice, industries such as tech, services, and small-to-medium enterprises often normalize overtime, misuse compensatory time off, and impose unpaid extra hours, turning the weekend into a theoretical right rather than a lived reality. The media urges: a two-day weekend should not be a luxury. This issue reflects not just individual well-being but also systemic gaps in labor law enforcement and oversight. Ensuring weekends off requires stronger legal enforcement, heightened corporate responsibility, and greater worker awareness of their rights. Only then can we achieve the goals of ‘decent work’ and a ‘better life.’ As a societal watchdog, the media must continue highlighting this fundamental right and advocate for its universal implementation—so that weekends become a public entitlement, not a privilege for the few.
