In recent years, Chongqing has been making a strong comeback to reclaim its status as China’s top automotive city. As a key old industrial base, Chongqing established its automotive manufacturing industry as early as the 1950s and long ranked among the nation’s highest in vehicle output. However, with the rise of new energy and intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs), the city—once dominated by traditional internal combustion engine vehicles—faced significant transformation challenges. Since 2020, Chongqing has accelerated its automotive industry upgrade, actively attracting and nurturing new energy vehicle (NEV) enterprises. Local brands such as Seres, Changan Deepal, and Avatr have risen rapidly, while leading companies like BYD and Geely have also set up manufacturing facilities in the city. In 2023, Chongqing produced over 2.6 million vehicles, with NEVs accounting for a significantly increased share, regaining the national number-one spot. This success stems not only from Chongqing’s mature supply chain and cost advantages but also from strong government support in policy, funding, and infrastructure. Today, Chongqing is advancing toward becoming a world-class hub for intelligent, connected, and new energy vehicles, aiming to secure a central role in the next wave of automotive transformation.
