In recent years, as global emphasis on renewable energy and grid stability continues to grow, demand for Energy Storage Systems (ESS) has surged rapidly. Against this backdrop, South Korea’s leading battery manufacturers—including LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, and SK On—are accelerating a strategic shift of part of their production capacity from traditional electric vehicle (EV) batteries toward ESS-specific cells. This pivot not only responds to strong demand for large-scale energy storage projects in markets like the U.S. and Europe but also reflects a long-term strategy to diversify business portfolios and reduce reliance on the EV market alone. For instance, LG Energy Solution has deployed large-scale ESS projects across multiple U.S. states and plans to expand its ESS battery production capacity both domestically and overseas. Meanwhile, Samsung SDI is focusing on developing high-safety, long-life lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries tailored for energy storage, addressing Western customers’ dual priorities of cost-efficiency and safety. Furthermore, as governments worldwide advance carbon neutrality goals, supportive policies for energy storage are further fueling investment in the sector. Experts predict that the ESS market could become the second-largest application for lithium-ion batteries after EVs in the coming years, positioning Korean battery makers—through early strategic moves—at a competitive advantage in the global energy storage value chain.
