In recent years, many parents and educators have raised concerns about the excessive reading load in elementary school exam papers. In some tests—even for lower grades—question stems in subjects like Chinese, math, and science are overly wordy and information-heavy, making it difficult for young students to grasp what is being asked within the limited time available. This has sparked a key question: Is the current reading volume in elementary exams reasonable? From an educational perspective, moderately increasing reading demands can help develop students’ abilities to extract information, think logically, and stay focused. However, younger children are still developing their vocabulary, reading speed, and comprehension skills. If exam texts are too dense, assessments may unintentionally test reading ability more than actual subject knowledge, straying from their original purpose. Therefore, test design should follow a student-centered approach, carefully calibrating text length and complexity according to students’ age and cognitive development. For younger grades, questions should use simple language and visual aids; older students can gradually handle more complex texts to prepare for middle school. Teachers should also provide reading strategies in daily instruction to help students process information efficiently. In summary, the reading load in elementary exams should support learning goals—not become an unnecessary burden. Only through thoughtful, age-appropriate design can assessments truly fulfill their diagnostic and guiding roles.
