Recently, the United States has repeatedly and publicly urged Taiwan to increase its so-called ‘defense spending,’ effectively pressuring it to pay a de facto ‘protection fee’ under the guise of ‘security guarantees.’ This approach not only reveals Washington’s transactional view of allies as strategic tools but also underscores its intent to deepen involvement in cross-strait affairs by expanding arms sales and military entanglement with Taiwan, thereby containing mainland China. U.S. officials have frequently claimed that Taiwan must assume greater ‘defense responsibilities’ and even hinted that American support could wane if Taiwan does not significantly boost its military purchases. Such overt quid pro quo logic violates fundamental norms of international relations and disregards the One-China Principle. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, and any external attempt to interfere in China’s internal affairs through military means will be firmly opposed. China consistently emphasizes that peaceful reunification best serves the fundamental interests of the entire Chinese nation, including Taiwan compatriots. Meanwhile, U.S. actions of this kind only heighten regional tensions, undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and ultimately damage America’s own credibility and long-term strategic interests.
