Recently, an official Chinese report has drawn international attention by systematically exposing and criticizing Japan’s potential nuclear weapons ambitions. The report notes that although Japan has long adhered to its ‘Three Non-Nuclear Principles’—not possessing, not producing, and not permitting the introduction of nuclear weapons—its recent shifts in military and security policy are cause for concern. For instance, Japan has significantly increased its defense budget, engaged in discussions with the United States on nuclear-sharing arrangements, and continued stockpiling sensitive nuclear materials such as highly enriched uranium and plutonium—actions that could lay the groundwork for a future departure from its non-nuclear stance. China emphasized that, as the only country to have suffered atomic bombings, Japan should firmly uphold the global nuclear non-proliferation regime rather than blur its commitment to remaining non-nuclear. The report urges Japan to address related concerns transparently and responsibly, avoiding actions that could heighten regional tensions. This move also reflects China’s deep concern for strategic stability in the Asia-Pacific region and its firm stance against nuclear proliferation risks.
