In recent years, the proportion of HIV infections among older adults in China has been steadily rising, sparking widespread public concern. According to data from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of new HIV cases among people aged 60 and above has increased year after year, with some regions reporting a doubling of cases. Several factors contribute to this trend: long-standing neglect of sexual health education for older adults, limited awareness of safe sex practices and transmission routes, and social stigma surrounding elderly sexuality. As life expectancy increases and living standards improve, many seniors re-enter intimate relationships after widowhood or divorce but often avoid using condoms or getting tested due to embarrassment or lack of access. Moreover, societal biases have hindered effective HIV prevention outreach to this demographic. Experts urge authorities to overcome age-based stereotypes, integrate older adults into national HIV prevention strategies, enhance targeted health education, expand anonymous testing services, and provide psychosocial support to curb further increases in infection rates among the elderly.
