Recently, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has sanctioned Vietnamese national team defender Pham Ly Duc for an act of violent conduct during an international match. According to the AFC Disciplinary Committee, Duc committed an unsporting and violent act against an opposing player in a June 2024 match against a Southeast Asian rival, violating Article 48 of the AFC Disciplinary and Ethics Code. Following an investigation, the AFC imposed a two-match suspension from official international competitions and a fine of USD 5,000.The incident occurred in the 78th minute when Duc struck an opponent in the face with his elbow during an aerial challenge, causing the player to fall to the ground momentarily. Although the on-field referee only issued a yellow card at the time, post-match video review led the AFC to reclassify the act as violent conduct warranting additional disciplinary action. The Vietnam Football Federation has acknowledged the decision and pledged to reinforce player education on proper on-field behavior.This sanction not only affects Duc personally but may also weaken Vietnam’s defensive lineup in upcoming crucial qualifiers. The AFC reiterated its commitment to ensuring fair play and player safety, emphasizing that any form of violence or misconduct will be dealt with firmly.
