Recently, the winter fishing festival at Ulungur Lake in Fuhai County, Altay Prefecture of Xinjiang, kicked off with great fanfare, drawing numerous tourists and photography enthusiasts. As one of China’s northernmost large-scale winter fishing events, Ulungur Lake’s winter harvest has a history spanning over 60 years. It not only embodies the long-standing fishing traditions of local ethnic groups such as the Kazakhs and Mongols but has also evolved into a distinctive winter cultural and tourism brand that integrates folk customs, eco-tourism, and intangible cultural heritage experiences.Winter fishing typically runs from late December to February, when the lake’s ice layer exceeds 50 centimeters in thickness—strong enough to support heavy equipment. Fishermen use the traditional “large drag net” method: drilling holes in the ice, lowering nets, and relying on generations of experience to track fish movements. After hours or even a full day of coordinated effort, they haul tens of thousands of kilograms of fresh fish onto the ice. The moment the net breaks the surface, shimmering fish leap across the ice amid cheers and excitement—a truly spectacular sight.In recent years, local authorities have actively promoted the “ice-and-snow economy,” combining winter fishing with ice festivals, ethnic song-and-dance performances, and food markets to create a unique winter tourism attraction in China’s frontier region.
