Recently, strong sandstorms have hit multiple areas in Qinghai and Gansu provinces, drastically reducing visibility—sometimes to less than 100 meters—and significantly impacting transportation, agriculture, and public health. These sandstorms were primarily caused by the combined effects of southward-moving cold air and dry surface conditions. Spring is the peak season for sandstorms in northwestern China, as vegetation has not yet fully regrown, leaving loose soil vulnerable to high winds that easily lift dust into the air. Meteorological authorities have issued yellow or orange alerts, urging the public to limit outdoor activities and take protective measures, especially for individuals with respiratory conditions, the elderly, and children. Transportation hubs such as highways and airports have implemented enhanced controls, resulting in delays or cancellations of some flights and train services. Experts note that thanks to ongoing ecological restoration efforts—including the Three-North Shelterbelt Program and initiatives like returning farmland to forests and grasslands—sandstorm frequency in China has generally declined in recent years. However, localized extreme sandstorm events can still occur due to natural conditions and climate variability. Continued efforts in desertification control and regional coordination will be essential to enhance resilience against such extreme weather events.
