Recently, many regions in China have begun piloting a ‘snow day’ policy for primary and secondary schools, building upon existing spring and autumn breaks—drawing widespread public attention. A ‘snow day’ refers to a temporary school closure granted during extreme winter weather conditions such as heavy snowfall, severe cold, or icy roads, aimed at ensuring student safety and well-being. Initially trialed in frigid areas like Northeast China and Inner Mongolia, this practice is now gradually expanding to parts of North and Northwest China. The ‘snow day’ isn’t just an unplanned holiday; it’s integrated with meteorological early-warning systems and emergency education protocols to adjust teaching schedules scientifically. For instance, some local authorities automatically activate snow days when red or orange blizzard alerts are issued, supplementing missed lessons through online instruction. This approach not only safeguards students’ travel safety but also reflects a more humane and flexible education management model. It’s important to note that snow days differ from traditional winter or summer vacations—they are temporary, contingency-based adjustments. Education experts suggest that formally incorporating snow days into local education regulations, along with robust remote learning resources, could more effectively mitigate disruptions caused by extreme weather. Parents largely support the initiative, citing reduced risks for children commuting in snow and less pressure on family logistics.
