In recent years, new psychoactive substances (NPS) have continuously evolved in form, often disguised as everyday items to evade detection and lure unsuspecting users—particularly teenagers and young adults. These substances are frequently packaged to resemble common products such as e-liquid for vapes, powdered ‘milk tea,’ ‘pop rocks’ candy, LSD ‘blotter paper’ (often called ‘stamps’), regular sweets, or even weight-loss pills. Their appearance is nearly identical to legitimate goods, making them highly deceptive and dangerous. For instance, LSD ‘stamps’ are tiny paper squares infused with lysergic acid diethylamide; placing one under the tongue can induce powerful hallucinations. Similarly, some vape liquids may be laced with synthetic cannabinoids or etomidate—controlled substances that can cause confusion, rapid heartbeat, or even psychosis. Alarmingly, so-called ‘smart drugs’ or ‘energy-boosting drinks’ might also contain stimulants that lead to addiction and neurological damage with prolonged use. Experts urge the public to remain vigilant: avoid consuming any food, supplement, or product of unknown origin, especially those with unusual packaging or exaggerated health claims. Parents and educators must enhance drug awareness education to help youth recognize these hidden threats and build a strong defense against substance abuse.
