During winter, the cold and dry climate reduces the activity of sebaceous and sweat glands, leading to a thinner natural oil layer on the skin and a weakened protective barrier. Bathing too frequently—especially with hot water or harsh, alkaline soaps—can strip away this already limited layer of protective oils, resulting in dryness, itching, or even cracked skin. Over-bathing may also disrupt the skin’s microbiome, increasing the risk of irritation or infection. Therefore, it’s advisable to reduce bathing frequency in winter—typically 2–3 times per week is sufficient. Use lukewarm water (ideally between 37°C and 40°C), avoid prolonged showers, and choose gentle, moisturizing cleansers. Applying body lotion immediately after bathing helps lock in moisture and maintain skin health. This is especially important for the elderly, children, and those with sensitive skin, who should prioritize ‘moderate cleansing’ to prevent winter-related skin issues.
