The ‘Zircon’ (Russian: Циркон) is a hypersonic anti-ship cruise missile developed by Russia, drawing significant attention in recent years for its extreme speed and penetration capabilities. Russian officials have repeatedly claimed that the Zircon can reach speeds of up to Mach 9 (approximately 11,000 km/h or 6,800 mph). However, some Western defense analysts remain skeptical, suggesting that real-world operational speeds may be slightly lower—likely between Mach 5 and Mach 8. Even at the lower end, this still firmly classifies Zircon as a hypersonic weapon (typically defined as exceeding Mach 5), far outpacing conventional anti-ship missiles, which usually travel at Mach 0.8 to Mach 2. Combined with its ability to fly at low altitudes, Zircon’s high velocity makes it extremely difficult for existing air defense systems to intercept. The missile can be launched from surface ships, submarines, and potentially strategic bombers, offering multi-platform deployment flexibility. It has already entered service with the Russian military and is reportedly deployed on select frigates and nuclear-powered submarines, serving as a key asymmetric countermeasure against U.S. aircraft carrier strike groups.
