Should the rise of commercial spaceflight be ‘thanked’ to Elon Musk? This question has sparked widespread debate. Undeniably, Musk and his company SpaceX have played a pivotal role in advancing commercial space activities. Even before SpaceX, other firms had explored commercial pathways, and decades of government-funded research, supportive policies, and mature supply chains were equally essential. Thus, rather than simply ‘thanking Musk,’ it’s more accurate to view him as a key catalyst at the intersection of timing and innovation. His contributions are significant, but commercial space is ultimately the result of collective effort—and its future will depend on continued collaboration across many players.
