In January 2025, the U.S. government formally notified the World Health Organization (WHO) of its decision to withdraw from the international body. In response, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the WHO, as the cornerstone of the global public health governance system, plays an irreplaceable role in coordinating international pandemic response and promoting global health equity. China has consistently supported the WHO’s leadership in global health affairs and calls on all countries to strengthen solidarity and cooperation to jointly address global health challenges.The spokesperson emphasized that the U.S. unilateral withdrawal not only undermines the principle of multilateralism but may also weaken the world’s collective capacity to respond to public health emergencies—especially at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has not yet fully subsided and risks of emerging infectious diseases persist. China urges relevant countries to act responsibly within international organizations, prioritizing the well-being of humanity and refraining from unilateral actions that could jeopardize global cooperation.China will continue to firmly support and actively participate in the WHO’s initiatives, working toward building a global community of health for all and making greater contributions to global public health.
