上万市民赶早赴重庆华岩寺领腊八粥

On the morning of January 18, Chongqing’s Huayan Temple hosted its annual Laba Festival porridge distribution event, drawing tens of thousands of residents who braved the cold to line up early for a bowl of traditional Laba congee—a symbol of good fortune and blessings for the new year. The Laba Festival, celebrated on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, is a cherished Chinese tradition where people consume Laba porridge made from a mix of grains, beans, nuts, and dried fruits to ward off the winter chill and invite prosperity. Since 2005, Huayan Temple has consistently organized this charitable event, which has grown into a significant local cultural gathering. This year, the temple prepared tens of thousands of servings using over ten ingredients—including glutinous rice, red beans, peanuts, lotus seeds, and longan—slow-cooked to perfection. Many attendees described the experience as both a continuation of cultural heritage and a source of spiritual comfort. Volunteers and monks worked together to maintain order and distribute the porridge, spreading warmth and compassion. The event not only celebrates China’s rich traditions but also embodies the Buddhist spirit of kindness and altruism.
