Recently, a member of the Hainan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) proposed a systematic enhancement of the coconut industry to drive high-quality local economic development and rural revitalization. The delegate noted that while Hainan is China’s largest coconut-producing region—endowed with unique natural resources and a solid industrial foundation—it still faces challenges such as short industrial chains, insufficient deep processing, weak brand influence, and limited technological innovation. To address these issues, the proposal recommends a multi-pronged approach involving policy support, technological empowerment, brand building, and integration of primary, secondary, and tertiary industries to establish a modern coconut industry system. Specific measures include increasing R&D investment to cultivate high-yield, high-quality coconut varieties; supporting enterprises in developing high-value-added products like coconut water, coconut milk, coconut oil, and activated carbon; creating an internationally recognized regional public brand—’Hainan Coconut’; and integrating coconut farming with rural tourism and cultural experiences to extend the industrial chain and enhance value creation. The delegate emphasized that systematically upgrading the coconut industry will not only boost farmers’ incomes but also strengthen the competitiveness of Hainan’s tropical specialty agriculture, contributing green momentum to the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port.
