Recently, China’s National Disease Control and Prevention Administration announced that the Nipah virus has been included in the country’s national surveillance and testing system for notifiable infectious diseases. This move aims to strengthen early warning and prevention capabilities against emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. The Nipah virus is a zoonotic pathogen primarily transmitted by fruit bats, capable of causing severe respiratory illness and encephalitis, with a case fatality rate ranging from 40% to 75%. First identified in Malaysia in 1998, the virus has since caused multiple outbreaks in Southeast and South Asia. Although no indigenous cases have been reported in China to date, the inclusion of Nipah virus in the monitoring system is a strategic precaution given the high volume of international travel and trade, as well as the ongoing risk of outbreaks in neighboring countries. With this update, disease control agencies and medical institutions at all levels will now be equipped with the necessary diagnostic capabilities and can swiftly activate emergency response protocols upon detection of suspected cases, thereby effectively preventing potential importation and spread. This decision also reflects China’s strong sense of responsibility toward global public health security and its proactive approach to epidemic preparedness.
