Recently, China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations delivered a strong statement at a UN Security Council meeting regarding Japan’s plan to discharge Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean, urging Tokyo to deeply reflect on and immediately rectify its erroneous decision. The Chinese representative emphasized that Japan’s unilateral move poses serious threats to the global marine environment and human health, and violates both international legal obligations and the expectations of the international community. China stressed that the disposal of nuclear-contaminated water is not merely a domestic issue for Japan, but a matter of significant global public interest. Tokyo must adopt a scientific, transparent, and responsible approach by genuinely addressing concerns from neighboring countries and the broader international community, reconsidering its discharge plan, and engaging in open and credible cooperation with relevant states and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). China called on Japan to halt its forced implementation of the discharge plan and fulfill its international responsibilities to prevent irreversible harm to the marine ecosystem and future generations.
