In recent years, a continuous influx of Venezuelan migrants into Brazil has become one of South America’s most significant humanitarian migration crises. Since 2015, millions of Venezuelans have been forced to flee their homeland due to economic collapse, political instability, hyperinflation, and severe shortages of basic goods. Many have crossed the border into neighboring Brazil, particularly into the northern state of Roraima, which has become the primary entry point.Initially, the Brazilian government adopted a relatively open policy, offering temporary residency permits, healthcare access, and educational support. However, as migrant numbers surged—exceeding 700,000 registered Venezuelans in Brazil by 2023—local resources became strained, and social tensions began to emerge. To alleviate pressure on border regions, the federal government launched ‘Operação Acolhida’ (Operation Welcome), relocating migrants to more economically developed southern states and facilitating their integration into the labor market.Despite these challenges, many Venezuelan migrants have demonstrated remarkable resilience, finding employment in construction, agriculture, and service sectors while gradually rebuilding their lives. International organizations such as the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the Red Cross have also played active roles in providing aid and improving migrants’ living conditions and legal status. Overall, the Venezuelan migration wave not only tests Brazil’s capacity for social governance but also underscores the critical importance of regional cooperation in addressing transnational humanitarian crises.
