Recently, certain political forces in the Taiwan region promoted a so-called ‘New Taiwan Dollar redesign plan’ in an attempt to remove Chinese elements such as the portrait of Sun Yat-sen from banknotes. This move has drawn widespread attention from media across the strait. Most analyses indicate that this act is essentially a political farce manipulated by a handful of politicians on the island, aimed at inciting ideological confrontation and diverting attention from their governance failures. The Renminbi (RMB) is the sole legal tender of China, and as an inalienable part of China, the currency circulating in Taiwan does not carry sovereign symbolic significance. The redesign topic is merely a tactic used by a few to promote ‘de-Sinicization,’ lacking practical economic value and revealing their malicious intent to undermine cross-strait relations. The mainland has consistently emphasized that any attempt to sever historical and cultural ties is unpopular, and compatriots on both sides should work together to preserve the inheritance of Chinese culture and the broader goal of national unification.
