While some young JSDF personnel or cadets claim their visits are meant to ‘honor ancestors’ or ‘pray for peace,’ such acts are often perceived—both domestically and internationally—as attempts to downplay or whitewash Japan’s wartime aggression.It should be noted that the JSDF was established under Japan’s postwar pacifist constitution as a strictly defensive force, intended to contribute to regional stability rather than revive militaristic ambitions. However, if shrine visits become a recurring or symbolic practice among future military leaders, it may signal a problematic historical consciousness and could be interpreted as evidence of a rightward shift in Japan’s security policy. This risks hurting the sentiments of neighboring Asian countries that suffered under Japanese occupation and may heighten regional security tensions.Although the Japanese government maintains that such visits are private acts protected under the principle of separation of religion and state, the national role of the JSDF makes it difficult to entirely depoliticize these actions.
