Recently, the Thai military denied media reports claiming that Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to a ceasefire. Earlier, some international and regional outlets cited anonymous sources stating that both countries had reached a temporary truce in their contested border areas to ease tensions. However, a spokesperson for Thailand’s Ministry of Defense clarified in June 2024 that no formal or informal ceasefire agreement has been reached between the two sides. The spokesperson emphasized that Thailand remains committed to resolving disputes through diplomatic channels, but all claims about an ‘agreed ceasefire’ are unfounded.Thailand and Cambodia have long-standing territorial disputes along their shared border, particularly around the Preah Vihear temple area, which has historically triggered armed clashes. Recent standoffs between patrol units have reignited concerns about escalating hostilities. Although ASEAN and other international bodies have urged restraint, no high-level military or diplomatic talks have yet taken place to facilitate tangible de-escalation. Analysts note that without mutual trust mechanisms and clear communication channels, the risk of miscalculation remains high. Thailand’s clarification aims to prevent public misinterpretation and reaffirms its stance on addressing border issues through lawful and orderly means.
