In some locations, poor installation has led to problems such as warping, loosening, or even cracking, further increasing trip hazards. In response, Shanghai authorities have swiftly removed problematic stainless steel tactile paving and plan to gradually replace it with safer, slip-resistant, and nationally compliant alternatives—typically rubber or ceramic tactile tiles. This move underscores a people-centered approach to urban management and highlights that functionality and safety should take precedence over visual design in public infrastructure. Going forward, Shanghai aims to continue improving its barrier-free environment to better protect the mobility rights of people with disabilities.
