In recent years, Beijing has gradually reduced and even ceased using traditional de-icing agents on roads during winter. This shift is driven by multiple concerns. Firstly, while conventional de-icers—primarily composed of sodium chloride and calcium chloride—effectively melt snow and ice, they severely corrode urban infrastructure such as bridges, roads, and underground pipelines, significantly increasing maintenance costs. Secondly, when melted snow containing these chemicals flows into soil and water bodies, it harms the ecological environment, inhibits plant growth, and can even contaminate groundwater. The high salt content also damages roadside trees and green belts, often causing vegetation to turn yellow or die after snowfall. To address these issues, Beijing has turned to mechanical snow removal, eco-friendly alternatives like calcium magnesium acetate, and more precise snow-clearing operations. Although these methods may be costlier or slightly less efficient, they align better with sustainable development goals. During the 2022 Winter Olympics, Beijing extensively deployed green snow-removal technologies, showcasing its commitment to eco-conscious urban management. Thus, saying ‘goodbye’ to traditional de-icing agents represents not just a technical upgrade, but a crucial step toward a greener, low-carbon city.
