In June 2024, a fire broke out in the early hours at an aging residential building in Hung Hom, Kowloon, Hong Kong, forcing over 400 residents to evacuate urgently in the middle of the night. According to the Fire Services Department, the blaze originated from a lower-floor unit and was likely caused by an electrical short circuit. Built in the 1970s, the building lacked modern fire safety features such as automatic sprinkler systems and adequately wide escape routes, which significantly hampered rescue efforts. Fortunately, firefighters arrived promptly and brought the fire under control within two hours. No fatalities were reported, though more than ten people were hospitalized for smoke inhalation. The incident has reignited public concern over fire safety in Hong Kong’s aging residential buildings. Currently, around 8,000 private residential buildings in the city are over 50 years old, many still not compliant with current fire safety standards. Experts are urging the government to accelerate urban renewal initiatives and mandatory fire safety upgrades, while also enhancing public awareness of fire prevention.
