Goldman Sachs recently released a research report stating that while ‘tokenized gold’—an emerging form combining blockchain technology with traditional assets—has attracted market attention, its current impact on gold prices remains limited and it is not yet a primary driver of gold price movements. Tokenized gold refers to the process of converting physical gold into digital tokens on a blockchain, where each token typically represents a specific weight of physical gold, enabling more convenient, transparent, and divisible transactions.According to Goldman Sachs, the tokenized gold market is still relatively small in scale and lacks sufficient liquidity. Its main participants are largely crypto-native users or institutional investors, and it has not yet penetrated mainstream gold investment channels. In contrast, traditional factors such as gold ETFs, central bank gold purchases, and geopolitical risks remain the core drivers of gold prices. Additionally, regulatory uncertainty, immature custody mechanisms, and low market awareness continue to constrain the broader adoption of tokenized gold.Nevertheless, Goldman Sachs notes that over the long term, as digital asset infrastructure improves and regulatory frameworks mature, tokenized gold could enhance the efficiency and accessibility of gold markets, particularly in cross-border payments and decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. In the near term, however, investors should continue focusing on traditional determinants of gold prices, such as macroeconomic conditions, the U.S. dollar’s performance, and real interest rates.
