Recently, China’s Ministry of Commerce responded to U.S. restrictions on imports of Chinese rare earth magnets. The Ministry stated that the U.S. justification of ‘national security’ for limiting high-performance rare earth permanent magnets from China lacks factual basis, violates international trade rules, and undermines global supply chain stability. China is the world’s largest producer and exporter of rare earth elements, which are essential components in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and consumer electronics. The Ministry emphasized that China remains committed to openness and cooperation, striving to safeguard the security and resilience of global supply chains. At the same time, China will continue to regulate rare earth exports in accordance with laws and regulations to ensure sustainable resource use, and firmly opposes any abuse of export controls aimed at suppressing other countries’ industrial development. Experts note that while the U.S. move may accelerate efforts to diversify global rare earth supply chains, it remains heavily reliant on Chinese rare earth products in the short term. China urges the U.S. to abandon unilateralism and resolve differences through dialogue and cooperation to jointly advance green and low-carbon technologies.
