Recently, China, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand conducted a joint law enforcement and security exercise in the Mekong River region. The drill aimed to deepen regional law enforcement cooperation and enhance collective capabilities to address transnational crimes, drug trafficking, illegal fishing, and maritime emergencies. Participating forces included personnel from police, coast guard, border defense, and relevant agencies of all four countries, who carried out simulated scenarios such as joint patrols, emergency response, intelligence sharing, and coordinated incident handling to comprehensively test the effectiveness of multilateral collaboration mechanisms. As a vital international waterway connecting the four nations, the Mekong River has long faced complex non-traditional security challenges. Following the 2011 Mekong River massacre, the four countries established a regularized joint patrol and law enforcement mechanism. This recent exercise represents another significant implementation under that framework. Experts note that such joint operations not only help maintain regional security and stability but also reflect the shared commitment of the four countries to building a community with a shared future and promoting regional peace and development.Looking ahead, the four nations plan to expand cooperation into additional areas, including counter-terrorism, combating telecom fraud, environmental protection, and humanitarian assistance, thereby advancing sub-regional collaboration along the Lancang-Mekong corridor to a higher level.
