After a decade of meticulous restoration, the Hall of Mental Cultivation (Yangxin Dian) in the Forbidden City has recently reopened to the public. Originally built during the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty, this palace became the central hub for imperial governance and daily life during the Qing Dynasty, witnessing over two centuries of China’s late imperial history. The restoration project, launched in 2015, is a key component of the Palace Museum’s ‘Safe Forbidden City’ initiative, aiming to comprehensively preserve the historic structure, restore its original appearance, and enhance its exhibition capabilities.Throughout the restoration, experts adhered to the principles of ‘minimal intervention’ and ‘preservation of original condition,’ systematically repairing architectural elements such as structural frameworks, painted decorations, roof tiles, and wooden components. Advanced scientific methods were also employed for condition monitoring and material analysis. In tandem with the physical restoration, the exhibition within the Hall of Mental Cultivation has been upgraded, integrating authentic artifacts, digital interactivity, and reconstructed historical settings to vividly illustrate Qing court politics and culture. The newly reopened Hall not only maintains its historical authenticity and integrity but also offers an immersive and educational experience, serving as a vital gateway for understanding ancient Chinese imperial institutions and cultural heritage.
