In recent years, as China’s navy has rapidly expanded—particularly with the launch of successive domestically built aircraft carriers—questions have arisen over whether the United States still maintains its carrier advantage over China. Currently, the U.S. operates 11 nuclear-powered supercarriers, all Nimitz- or Ford-class vessels displacing around 100,000 tons, offering unmatched global reach, high-intensity combat capability, and large air wings. By contrast, China has three carriers in service: the Liaoning (a refitted Soviet-era hull), the Shandong (China’s first indigenously built conventional carrier), and the Fujian—the first Chinese carrier equipped with an electromagnetic catapult system. Although the Fujian marks a significant technological leap, it has yet to achieve full operational capability, and China still lags behind in aircraft sortie rates, carrier air wing size, and long-range logistical support.That said, China’s anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) capabilities—including advanced missiles, submarines, and space-based surveillance—pose real challenges to U.S. carrier operations in the Western Pacific. While the U.S. retains overwhelming superiority in carrier platforms themselves, its tactical freedom in regional contingencies is increasingly constrained. Thus, although America still leads in numbers, quality, and combat experience, its once-unquestioned dominance is being eroded by China’s integrated maritime power. The future U.S.-China carrier rivalry will extend beyond ships alone, encompassing integrated systems, technological innovation, and strategic deployment.
