Recently, in response to reports that Japanese leaders might visit the Yasukuni Shrine, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its firm stance. The Chinese side emphasized that the Yasukuni Shrine symbolizes Japan’s militarist aggression during World War II and enshrines 14 Class-A war criminals among other convicted war criminals. Any visit by Japanese political figures—regardless of form—to the shrine constitutes a grave provocation against historical justice and human conscience, and deeply hurts the feelings of people in victimized Asian countries, including China. China urges Japan to face up to and reflect sincerely on its history of aggression, honor its past statements and commitments regarding historical issues, and handle this matter responsibly to regain the trust of its Asian neighbors and the international community. Healthy development of China-Japan relations must be grounded in an accurate understanding of history. Any attempt to whitewash wartime aggression or undermine the post-war international order will be met with resolute opposition.
