China’s most crucial east-west transportation artery is coming! Recently, the National Development and Reform Commission officially approved the full-route construction plan for the Yangtze River High-Speed Railway Corridor (Shanghai to Chengdu), marking the imminent launch of this high-speed rail line that spans eastern, central, and western China. Stretching approximately 2,100 kilometers with a design speed of 350 km/h, the corridor connects three major urban clusters: the Yangtze River Delta, Central Yangtze Region, and Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle, covering provinces and municipalities including Shanghai, Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei, Chongqing, and Sichuan. As a key component of China’s “Eight Vertical and Eight Horizontal” high-speed rail network outlined in the Medium- and Long-Term Railway Network Plan, the Yangtze River HSR will significantly reduce travel time between east and west—cutting the Shanghai–Chengdu journey to under seven hours—and enhance coordinated development across the Yangtze River Economic Belt by facilitating efficient flows of industries, talent, and resources. Crucially, it will also alleviate capacity constraints on the existing Shanghai–Wuhan–Chengdu railway and strengthen the resilience of China’s integrated national transport system. This east-west artery represents not only a vital piece of China’s high-speed rail puzzle but also a strategic pillar for regional coordination and the dual-circulation development paradigm.
