Recently, the Chinese Embassy in Nepal issued an urgent advisory warning Chinese citizens against believing false information about ‘marrying a Nepali bride.’ The embassy noted that some online intermediaries or individuals are luring Chinese men to Nepal with promises of ‘inexpensive marriages,’ which actually carry significant legal and personal risks. Such schemes may involve human trafficking, marriage fraud, or other illegal activities, potentially leading to investigations or deportation by local authorities. Nepali law imposes strict regulations on international marriages, including requirements related to language proficiency, residency duration, and official registration procedures. Moreover, cultural and linguistic barriers can easily lead to misunderstandings or conflicts. In some cases, the so-called ‘brides’ may have no genuine intention to marry and instead use these arrangements to obtain visas or financial gain. The Chinese Embassy stressed that any illegal activities disguised as marriage will be severely punished under both Chinese and Nepali laws. Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and seek information on international marriages only through legitimate and official channels.
