In June 2024, China successfully launched the Fengyun-4C (FY-4C) meteorological satellite from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center. This marks the third operational satellite in China’s new-generation geostationary Fengyun-4 series. Launched aboard a Long March-3B rocket into its designated orbit, FY-4C significantly enhances China’s capability for high-precision, high-frequency, and all-weather meteorological observation.Equipped with an advanced multi-channel scanning radiometer, a geostationary interferometric infrared sounder, and space environment monitoring instruments, FY-4C can capture rapid full-disk images of Earth every five minutes and deliver high-resolution atmospheric temperature and humidity profiles. These capabilities greatly improve early warning and real-time monitoring of extreme weather events such as typhoons, heavy rainfall, and severe convective storms, while also supporting climate research, ecological monitoring, and disaster prevention efforts.As a key component of China’s civilian space infrastructure, the Fengyun-4 series serves over 120 countries and regions worldwide. Its data has been integrated into the World Meteorological Organization’s global operational satellite network. The successful launch of FY-4C further strengthens China’s role in the international meteorological observation system, highlighting its growing innovation capacity and global responsibility in aerospace technology and meteorological services.
