In May 2024, China’s navy conducted the first sea trials of the Fujian aircraft carrier, marking a significant step toward its operational readiness. As China’s first domestically designed and built catapult-assisted aircraft carrier, the Fujian features a full-length flat flight deck, an advanced electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS), and arresting gear. With a full-load displacement exceeding 80,000 tons, it is currently the largest carrier in Asia and the second-largest in active service worldwide.The initial sea trials focused on testing critical systems including propulsion, navigation, command-and-control communications, and aircraft launch/recovery capabilities. Notably, the successful at-sea demonstration of the EMALS highlighted its reliability and stability—key prerequisites for operating next-generation carrier-based aircraft such as the J-35 stealth fighter and KJ-600 airborne early warning plane.The Fujian’s entry into service and ongoing training significantly enhance the Chinese navy’s blue-water operational and integrated combat capabilities. It also underscores China’s growing prowess in high-end defense manufacturing and technological self-reliance. The carrier will play a pivotal role in safeguarding national sovereignty, security, and development interests as the People’s Liberation Army Navy transitions toward a true global maritime force.
