In July 2024, the African Union (AU) issued a statement firmly opposing any country’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent state. The AU reaffirmed its consistent position of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of African nations and expressed support for the Federal Government of Somalia in its efforts to preserve national unity. Although Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has since established a relatively stable self-governing administration, it has never received widespread international recognition. The AU emphasized that any unilateral recognition of Somaliland would undermine regional peace and security and could trigger a chain reaction of other secessionist movements, threatening political stability across the African continent. The AU called on all relevant parties to pursue inclusive solutions through dialogue and consultation within the framework of Somalia’s constitution and legal system. This statement is widely seen as a direct response to recent moves by certain countries to deepen engagement with Somaliland, including considerations of establishing diplomatic relations, underscoring the AU’s firm commitment to upholding African unity and the principle of the inviolability of colonial-era borders.
