In recent years, China’s ‘Eight Vertical and Eight Horizontal’ high-speed rail network has been continuously expanded and is becoming increasingly comprehensive. As a core component of the Medium- and Long-Term Railway Network Plan, this network consists of eight north-south and eight east-west high-speed rail corridors, covering major urban clusters and economic zones across the country, with a total length exceeding 40,000 kilometers. Centered around key hubs such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu, the network effectively links coastal eastern regions with inland western areas and connects northern and southern China, significantly enhancing interregional transportation efficiency and economic integration. With the completion and operation of major lines like the Beijing–Shanghai, Beijing–Guangzhou, Shanghai–Kunming, and Lanzhou–Xinjiang corridors, high-speed rail has become the backbone of China’s passenger transport system—dramatically reducing travel time between cities and facilitating the efficient flow of talent, resources, and industries. By the end of 2023, China’s operational high-speed rail mileage surpassed 45,000 kilometers, ranking first globally. The ongoing refinement of the ‘Eight Vertical and Eight Horizontal’ network not only supports national strategic initiatives—such as coordinated development in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta, and the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle—but also lays a solid foundation for balanced regional development and a modern, integrated transportation system.
