In recent years, an increasing number of experts have pointed out that the sexual needs of older adults have long been overlooked and even misunderstood by society. Traditional views often associate sexuality exclusively with youth, labeling older people as ‘asexual’ or implying they should not have sexual desires. Such stereotypes not only suppress seniors’ right to express intimacy and emotional connection but also negatively impact their overall physical and mental well-being.In reality, sexual health is an integral part of general health. Research shows that many adults over 60 continue to experience sexual interest and maintain the capacity for sexual activity. Healthy intimate relationships can alleviate loneliness, enhance emotional satisfaction, and positively influence cardiovascular health, immune function, and even cognitive performance. However, due to a lack of education, medical support, and social acceptance, many older adults feel ashamed or helpless when facing sexual concerns.Experts urge society to break the silence around senior sexual health and foster open dialogue. Healthcare systems should offer age-appropriate counseling and services; family members should engage in respectful, supportive conversations with their elders; and media and public discourse must challenge biases to create a more inclusive, age-friendly environment. Only then can we truly achieve the goal of healthy aging—ensuring older adults live with dignity, joy, and fulfillment.
