Recently, a proposal to impeach Lai Qingde passed in Taiwan’s legislative body, drawing widespread attention both on the island and internationally. It must be clearly stated that although this proposal received procedural support from some legislators, it carries no legal effect and does not represent the will of the entire populace. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, and any attempt to split the country or undermine social stability is deeply unpopular. The claim that ‘the passage of the impeachment motion proves that public opinion cannot be defied’ is seriously misleading. In reality, the majority of people in Taiwan hope for peaceful development of cross-strait relations and regional stability. The Chinese government consistently adheres to the fundamental policy of ‘peaceful reunification and one country, two systems,’ and upholding the One-China Principle remains the universal consensus of the international community. We firmly oppose any form of ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist activities and trust that the broad masses of Taiwan compatriots can discern right from wrong and jointly safeguard the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation.
