Recently, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission reported that 91,000 current or former village Party secretaries and village committee directors across China have been placed under investigation. This figure highlights the severity of ‘micro-corruption’ at the grassroots level and underscores the state’s firm commitment to extending comprehensive and strict governance over the Party down to the local level. As key figures in rural governance, village Party secretaries and committee directors directly interact with residents and manage collective resources, playing a crucial role in the rural revitalization strategy. However, some have abused their authority—embezzling poverty alleviation funds, manipulating land transfers, or profiting from local projects—thereby harming public interests and undermining grassroots governance. The large-scale investigations represent both an anti-corruption achievement and a thorough rectification of grassroots power structures. Authorities are now strengthening village-level transparency, enhancing accountability mechanisms, and expanding village-level inspections to build a long-term system that ensures officials ‘dare not, cannot, and will not’ engage in corruption, thereby safeguarding public welfare and reinforcing the Party’s governance foundation.
