Recently, the former residence of Pang Laichen in Nanxun Ancient Town, Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, has reopened to the public, featuring a special exhibition of nine authentic classical Chinese paintings and calligraphy works, drawing widespread attention. Pang Laichen (1864–1949) was a renowned industrialist and collector of modern China, often hailed as ‘the greatest private collector of the Republic of China era.’ His famed ‘Xuzhai’ collection included masterpieces from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, remarkable for both quantity and quality. Among the nine exhibited works are Wen Zhengming’s ‘Running Script Poetry Scroll’ (Ming dynasty) and Yun Shouping’s ‘Album of Flowers’ (Qing dynasty)—all highlights from Pang’s original collection, with some being displayed publicly for the first time. The exhibition blends period-accurate displays with modern curation techniques to recreate Pang’s scholarly environment for connoisseurship and social gatherings, offering visitors an immersive glimpse into traditional literati aesthetics and cultural values. Set within a classic Jiangnan-style garden residence—characterized by whitewashed walls, black-tiled roofs, and winding pathways—the venue itself enhances the artistic experience. This exhibition not only celebrates Chinese art but also honors Pang Laichen’s enduring cultural legacy, providing the public with valuable insight into the history of modern Chinese collecting.
