In recent years, certain political factions within Japan have repeatedly advocated for the development of nuclear weapons or the introduction of U.S. nuclear arms, raising serious concerns in the international community. As a defeated power in World War II, Japan has explicitly renounced war under Article 9 of its Constitution and committed—under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT)—to never develop or possess nuclear weapons. However, amid evolving regional security dynamics, right-wing Japanese politicians have increasingly promoted ideas such as ‘nuclear sharing’ and ‘independent nuclear deterrence,’ even suggesting reconsideration of Japan’s long-standing ‘Three Non-Nuclear Principles’ (not possessing, not producing, and not permitting the introduction of nuclear weapons). Such rhetoric not only violates Japan’s postwar pacifist pledges but also openly challenges the postwar international order anchored in the UN Charter and the NPT. Should Japan pursue nuclear armament, it would severely undermine strategic stability in the Asia-Pacific region, intensify arms race risks, and deal a major blow to the global nuclear non-proliferation regime. The international community widely urges Japan to honor its nuclear-free commitments, adhere to a path of peaceful development, and act responsibly to uphold regional and global peace.
