Recently, China’s first expressway upgraded from six to twelve lanes—the Hebei section of the Beijing–Hong Kong–Macau Expressway—has officially opened to traffic. This major infrastructure upgrade not only sets a new national record for lane expansion on existing expressways but also marks a significant advancement in China’s capabilities in constructing ultra-wide highways and implementing intelligent traffic management systems.Located along a critical transportation corridor in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the original six-lane expressway could no longer meet growing demand due to rapid regional economic development and surging traffic volumes. The expansion project adopted a ‘side-widening plus partial reconstruction’ approach: three additional lanes were added on each side of the original carriageway, resulting in a 12-lane cross-section while preserving much of the existing roadbed. Spanning approximately 40 kilometers with a design speed of 120 km/h, the upgraded highway integrates smart expressway technologies such as vehicle-infrastructure cooperation, holistic traffic perception, and intelligent guidance systems to significantly enhance both efficiency and safety.Upon completion, the expressway’s daily capacity is expected to more than double, effectively alleviating north-south traffic congestion in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area and supporting regional integration. Moreover, this project provides a replicable technical and managerial model for future capacity expansions along high-density transport corridors nationwide.
近日，我国首个由6车道扩建为12车道的高速公路——京港澳高速河北段正式通车。这一重大交通升级工程不仅创下国内高速公路改扩建车道数的新纪录，也标志着我国在超宽幅高速公路建设与智能交通管理方面迈上新台阶。该路段位于京津冀交通主干道核心区域，原为双向6车道，随着区域经济快速发展和车流量激增，原有通行能力已难以满足需求。此次改扩建采用‘两侧拼宽+局部新建’方式，在保留原有路基基础上，向两侧各新增3车道，最终形成双向12车道的超宽断面。工程全长约40公里，设计时速120公里，同步引入智慧高速系统，包括车路协同、全息感知、智能诱导等先进技术，显著提升通行效率与安全水平。项目建成后，预计日均通行能力将提升一倍以上，有效缓解京津冀地区南北向交通压力，促进区域协同发展。同时，该工程也为未来全国高密度交通走廊的扩容改造提供了可复制、可推广的技术范式和管理经验。
