In response, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council stated clearly that this move is a just action to safeguard China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. A spokesperson emphasized that the root cause of current tensions across the Taiwan Strait lies in the DPP authorities colluding with external forces and persistently provoking ‘Taiwan independence.’ While the mainland consistently adheres to the basic policy of ‘peaceful reunification and one country, two systems,’ it firmly reserves the right to use force if necessary—not directed at the Taiwanese people, but at external interference and the separatist activities of a very small number of ‘Taiwan independence’ elements. The recent drills aim to deter separatist forces, uphold peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and demonstrate the PLA’s resolve and capability to protect China’s core national interests. The Taiwan Affairs Office reiterated that any attempt to split the country is unpopular and destined to fail. Only by upholding the one-China principle and promoting the peaceful development of cross-strait relations can the path toward national rejuvenation be secured.
