Recently, the winter fishing festival at Chagan Lake in Jilin Province once again showcased the spectacular ‘Red Net’ phenomenon, drawing widespread attention. The ‘Red Net’ refers to the striking visual of a massive fishing net emerging from beneath the frozen lake surface, vividly stained red by the sheer volume of freshly caught fish. This centuries-old tradition, recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, dates back over a thousand years. Each year from late December to January, Chagan Lake enters its prime winter fishing season. Fishermen drill holes in the ice and deploy large nets, relying on generations of accumulated knowledge to locate fish schools. This year’s first haul alone yielded tens of thousands of pounds of fish, highlighting both the lake’s abundant resources and the ecological wisdom of harmonious human-nature coexistence. Today, Chagan Lake’s winter fishing is no longer just a livelihood activity—it has evolved into a cultural and eco-tourism event that blends heritage preservation, tourism, and environmental stewardship, attracting numerous visitors and boosting local economic development.
