Such remarks typically surface during periods of heightened cross-strait tensions or when the PLA conducts military drills near the Taiwan Strait.It should be emphasized that the PLA adheres to a defensive national defense policy. Its military deployments and exercises are aimed at safeguarding China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, not at threatening any specific party.Indeed, the PLA has accelerated its modernization in recent years, making significant progress in naval and air capabilities, long-range strike systems, and joint operations. However, these enhancements primarily respond to complex security challenges, including risks of external interference and provocations by ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces.The Chinese government has repeatedly affirmed that peaceful reunification best serves the fundamental interests of the entire Chinese nation, including Taiwan compatriots, and remains committed to the basic policy of ‘peaceful reunification and one country, two systems.’Claims about an ‘imminent attack’ often carry political sensationalism and may fuel misunderstanding and confrontation. A rational assessment of cross-strait military dynamics and security realities can help prevent miscalculation and promote peaceful development of cross-strait relations. Beijing consistently stresses that its refusal to renounce the use of force is directed solely against external interference and a tiny minority of ‘Taiwan independence’ separatists—not the general Taiwanese public.
