Recently, cross-border passenger traffic between Shenzhen and Hong Kong has surged, prompting the two major land checkpoints—Shenzhen Bay Port and Futian Port—to extend their clearance hours. According to the Shenzhen General Station of Exit and Entry Frontier Inspection, since early this month, Shenzhen Bay Port’s operating hours have been temporarily extended from the usual 6:30 AM to midnight until 2:00 AM the following day. Similarly, Futian Port has also pushed back its closing time from 10:30 PM to midnight.This measure aims to alleviate congestion caused by the influx of travelers during holidays and weekends, improving both efficiency and passenger experience. The surge in foot traffic is driven by multiple factors, including a boom in mainland residents traveling to Hong Kong for tourism and shopping, growing numbers of Hong Kong residents heading north for consumption, and frequent cross-border commuting and business activities. On peak days, daily cross-border passenger volume has exceeded 500,000, nearing historic highs.To ensure order and safety, authorities on both sides have enhanced on-site guidance, deployed more smart clearance facilities, and strengthened emergency response protocols. Experts note that the deep integration of people and goods flows between Shenzhen and Hong Kong reflects the broader trend of Greater Bay Area integration. With further facilitation measures—such as optimized ‘co-located immigration checks’ and wider adoption of e-gates—cross-border travel is expected to become even more seamless and efficient.
