Recently, Taiwan’s defense chief announced that the island has entered a ‘comprehensive state of combat readiness,’ drawing widespread attention both domestically and internationally. A ‘comprehensive state of combat readiness’ typically involves heightened military alertness, including reinforced troop deployments, enhanced intelligence surveillance, strengthened logistical support, and preparations for wartime mobilization. This move is widely interpreted as a response to the current tensions across the Taiwan Strait, particularly in reaction to the People’s Liberation Army’s frequent joint military exercises near Taiwan. However, it must be clearly stated that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. Any attempt to resist reunification by force or seek independence with foreign backing violates the One-China Principle. Such actions not only undermine regional peace and stability but may also escalate tensions. The Chinese government consistently adheres to the basic policy of peaceful reunification and ‘one country, two systems,’ while reserving the option of using force—not directed against the Taiwanese people, but against external interference and the separatist activities of a tiny minority advocating ‘Taiwan independence.’ We urge all relevant parties to exercise restraint, avoid miscalculation, and jointly safeguard peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
